Avarua Primary took the overall title again finishing ahead of St Joseph’s Primary which was placed second and Apii Nikao for third. The Prince of Wales Athletics Championship 2017 was hosted by Apii Takitumu and Titikaveka College and was contested by primary schools from around Rarotonga. 101 officials worked hard to ensure that the competition ran smoothly. It got to the point where officials had to use ipads for photo finishes mainly in the senior to verify winners of each race. It was a perfect, warm and exhilarating day that was enjoyed by all.
Major sponsor CITC were extremely pleased with how the championship played out. This is the second year of a five-year sponsorship arrangement. Without CITCs support smaller schools find it really difficult to fund a high profile event.
CITC were the major sponsors along with suppliers Sanitarium, Watties, Anchor Milk, BioPak and Nike.CITC promoted their values of healthy food choices, healthy drinks and recycling on the day. All stall holders offered only healthy food choices in line with the CITC promotion and Apii Takitumu’s healthy food policy. The company’s involvement provided a much-needed support for the event which benefited the athletes and officials. There were extra marquees, sunscreen and water refill stations for everyone. CITC in association with Sanitarium also offered a breakfast for all registered athletes between 7am and 8am.
There were no entry fees this year as this will encouraged more families to come and support their children, their local school, and the championship.
